Kobie Du Plessis

Kobie Du Plessis is a renowned Concert and Classical Harpist. Born in South Africa, she has studied travelled and played across her home country as well as Europe, most notably in Holland and Spain. She has performed as Solo harpist for the Cape Town Symphony Orchestra and the Stellenbosch String Orchestra, and venues ranging from the Liceu Opera Theatre in Barcelona to the famous Grachten festival in Amsterdam. Kobie has also broadcasted solo, duo and trio concerts on South African radio and in 2005 held an international masterclass with the famous harpist Edward Witsenburg.

History:
Kobie du Plessis was born in South Africa to parents who encouraged culture. Her father was English Inspector of Schools in the Orange Free State, and her mother was a painter who exhibited widely and also performed as singer.

Kobie started with the piano at the age of seven, and from the age of nine started winning awards and scholarships with the piano at Eisteddfods and music exams.

She started on the Celtic Harp when she was twelve years old. She also performed with this harp in the Free State Youth Woodwind Orchestra.

Kobie attended the University of Pretoria to study harp at the Conservatorium under Rosalind Dunbar (who studied in Belgium and Holland under Phia Berghout) where she majored in performance. In her third year she won the Pretorium Trust Scholarship for outstanding performance. During her studies, Kobie joined the SABC Junior Orchestra and twice accompanied them on tour to South America. She performed the Debussy Dances with the orchestra in the Teatro Solis in Montevideo (Uruguay) as well as in South Africa. She also performed with the South African Youth Orchestra.

After her studies Kobie took harp lessons with Kathleen Alister, doyenne of harp in South Africa. Kobie also started teaching piano and harp. After marrying Charl du Plessis, she moved to the Western Cape with her husband and started freelancing in the Cape Town Symphony Orchestra (CTSO) and Cape Performing Arts Board (CAPAB).

Kobie formed a duo, Syrinx Duo, with principal flautist of the CTSO at that time, Corvin Matei. Together they recorded a compact disc with classical music for flute and harp. Syrinx Duo performed the Mozart Concerto for Harp and Flute for the 25th Anniversary of the Free State Orchestra (PACOFS) as well as with the CTSO. They also broadcast with the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC).
Kobie performed with various chamber music groups in the Western Cape. She also broadcast solo music for the SABC. She was frequently asked to free-lance in the Durban Orchestra and regularly performed solos with the Stellenbosch Chamber Orchestra.

While Kobie was free-lancing as first harpist for the Cape Town Symphony Orchestra, she, together with the CTSO, accompanied Pavarotti when he performed in the Stellenbosch, South Africa.
Kobie taught harp for must of the time, especially the Celtic Harp, which was more readily available to students. She also taught her daughter Suemari first on the Celtic Harp and later on the Concert Harp. Her son Chris plays the violin. Kobie arranged many pieces for harp and violin for her two children. Later she formed a duo with a violinist, Roelof Swart, with whom she performed for four years.
Kobie started arranging light and contemporary music to for solo harp as well as duos with a flute or violin for the purpose of performing at special events such as weddings, at exhibitions etc.

In 2001 Kobie moved overseas with her family. They first lived in Holland, where she performed in Amsterdam for the Grachten Festival as representative of her country. She repeatedly performed for the South African Embassy in The Hague. Kobie also performed with local musicians and choirs near Maastricht, where she lived. After two and a half years the family moved to Barcelona.

In 2004 she returned to the Western Cape where she performed two concerti with a string orchestra. She gave five solo recitals and one concert with a singer.

In 2005 Kobie performed in a Chamber Music Group at the Liceau Theatre in Barcelona. She also received her mentor and world famous harpist Edward Witsenburg at her home. Together with Edward Witsenburg and Magdalena Barera Oro, Kobie partook in a three harps concert.

Between 2006 and 2009 Kobie gave duo concerts with Thekla von Dombois, oboist, Matthias Weinman, cellist, Magdalena Barera Oro, harpist, Michelle Frances, singer, in Barcelona, as well as solo recitals.

In 2009 Kobie was invited to judge a harp competition in Feldkirchen, Austria, as part of the Harfentage, in the Vorarlberg area,where she taught and performed with Austrian harpist Gertrud Kaufman.

In 2010 Kobie gave concerts in Cologne with oboist Thekla von Dombois and together they toured the Western Cape South Africa. Kobie gave concerts with Roelof Swart, violinist in Stellenbosch and performed a solo recital in Johannesburg for the South African Harp Society.

In 2011 Kobie gave solo recitals in Barcelona, and harp and flute concerts in Salzburg, Austria, with flautist Amanda du Pre.

In 2012 Kobie performs a series of concerts on three of her harps, commencing on 26 April for the Charities of the BWN. In October she will perform harp and flute duo concerts with Amanda du Pre, in Barcelona and surroundings.

Recently Kobie developed an interest in arranging traditional music for the harp. Her latest interests are Celtic, South African, South America, Catalan and Spanish music. She has four harps, a Celtic, Austrian Folk and two Concert Harps. She likes to perform using one or a combination of her harps, which in combination with her diverse collection of music demonstrates all the different colors of the sounds of the harps.

Kobie Du Plessis és una renombrada arpista de concerts de música clàssica. Nescuda a Sud-àfrica, ha estudiat, viatjat y actuat pel seu país natal així com principalment a Holanda i Espanya. Ha tocat com arpista de solo per a la orquestra simfònica de CiutatdelCap i la orquestra de corda Stellenbosch, i llocs que van des de el teatredelLiceu de Barcelona fins al famós festival Grachten d’ Amsterdam. Kobie ha retrasmés per ràdio concerts de solo, duo i trio a Sud-àfrica i el 2005 va fer una masterclass internacional amb el famós arpista Edward Witsenburg.

 

Història:

 

Kobie du Plessis va néixer a Sud-àfrica. Els seus pares la van animar culturalment. El seu pare era un inspector anglès d’ensenyamentdelestat lliure d’ Orange, i la seva mare una pintora reconeguda i també cantant.

 

Kobie va començar amb el piano als set anys, i des de els nou va començar a guanyar premis i beques de piano a Eisateddfods i exàmens de música.

 

Va començar amb l’arpa celta quan tenia dotze anys. També va actuar amb aquesta arpa amb la jove orquestra Free State Woodwind.

 

Kobie va assistir a la Universitat de Pretòria per estudiar arpa al Conservatori sota el mestratge de Rosalind Dunbar (que va estudiar a Bélgica i Holanda amb Phia Berghout) on es va especialitzar amb interpretació. En el seu tercer any va guanyar la beca Pretorium Trust per la seva destacada actuació. Durant els seus estudis, Kobie es va incorporar a la orquestra junior SABC i va acompanyar-los dues vegades de gira per Sudamèrica. Després del seus estudis va fer lliçons d’arpa amb Kathleen Alister, degana d’arpa a Sud-àfrica. Kobie també va començar a ensenyar piano i arpa. Després de casar-se amb Charl du Plessis, es va trasladar al Cap oest amb el seu marit i començà a treballar pel seu compte amb la orquestra simfònica de Ciutat del Cap (CTSO) i amb Cape Performing Arts Board (CAPAB).

Kobie va actuar amb diferents grups de música de cámara al Cap oest. També va enregistrar a la ràdio musica de solo per la SABC. En diverses ocasions se li va demanar per actuar sola amb laDurbanorquestra i va tocar regularment solos amb la orquestra de càmara Stellenbosch.

 

Mentres Kobie era independent com primera arpista per la orquestra simfònica de Ciutat del Cap, juntament amb la CTSO, va acompanyar Pavarotti quan va actuar a Stellenbosch, a Sud-àfrica.

 

Kobie va ensenyar arpa quasi sempre, especialment l’arpa celta que va ser més fàcil pels estudiants. També va ensenyar a la seva filla Suemari, primer l’arpa celta i després el concert d’arpa. El seu fill Chris toca el violí. Kobie va adaptar molts fragments d’arpa i violí pels seus dos fills. Més tard va formar un duo amb el violinista, Roelof Swart, amb el qual va actuar durant quatre anys.

 

Kobie va començar adaptant música contemporània i lleugera per un solo d’arpa, així com duos amb una flauta o violí amb el propòsit d’actuar en esdeveniments especials com casaments, exposicions, etc.

 

L’any 2001 Kobie es va trasladar a l’estranger amb la seva família. Primer van viure a Holanda, on va actuar aAmsterdampel festival Grachten com a representantdelseu país. Varies vegades va interpretar a la embaixada sudafricana de la Haya. També va tocar amb músics locals i cors aprop deMaastricht,

on vivia. Després de dos anys i mig la família es va trasladar aBarcelona.

 

L’any 2004 va tornar al Cap oest on va interpretar dos concerts amb una orquestra de corda. Va donar cinq recitals de solo i un concert amb un cantant.

 

L’any 2005 Kobie va actuar amb un grup de música de càmara al teatredelLiceu de Barcelona. També va rebre a casa seva al seu mentor i molt famós arpista arreudelmón Edward Witsenburg. Junts amb Edward Witsenburg i Magdalena Barera Oro, Kobie va participar en un concert de tres arpas.

 

Entre l’any 2006 i 2009, Kobie va donar dos concerts aBarcelonaamb Thekla von Dombois, oboista, Matthias Weinman, violoncel.lista, Magdalena Barera Oro, arpista i Michelle Frances, cantant, així com recitals de solo.

 

L’any 2009 Kobie va ser invitada com a jutge en una competició d’arpa a Feldkirchen, Austria, que forma part de Harfentage, a la zona de Vorarlberg on

va ensenyar i tocar amb la arpista austríaca Gertrud Kaufman.

 

L’ any 2010 Kobie va donar concerts  Colònia amb l’oboista Thekla von Dombois i junts van anar de gira al Cap oest de Sud-àfrica. Kobie va donar concerts amb Roelof Swart, violinista a Stellenbosch i va actuar en un recital de solo aJohannesburgper la societat d’arpa de Sud-àfrica.

 

L’any 2011 Kobie va donar recitals de solo aBarcelona, i concerts d’arpa i flauta aSalzburg.Austriaamb la flautista Amanda du Pre.

 

L’any 2012 Kobie va interpretar una serie de concerts de les seves tres arpas, començant el 26 de abril per les societats benèficasdelBWN. El mes d’octubre

va tocar dos concerts a duo amb Amanda du Pre, aBarcelonai voltants.

 

Recentment Kobie ha desenvolupat un interest en adaptar la música tradicional per l’arpa. El que més l’interessa últimament és la música celta, sud-africana,

sud-americana, catalana i espanyola. Té quatre arpes, una celta, una de folk austríaca i dos arpes de concert. Li agrada tocar utilitzant una sola o una

combinació de les seves arpes, que en combinació amb la seva diversa col.lecció de música demostra tots els diferents colorsdelsons de les arpes.
